Sonny Bono…Sonny and Cher? Yes. THAT Sonny Bono.

After a successful recording career, Salvatore Phillip “Sonny” Bono entered the world of politics, becoming Mayor of Palm Springs California, and later, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives where he served until his untimely passing in 1998.

During his service as a member of the House of Representatives, Sonny worked for the passage of the Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA). It is commonly known as the SONNY BONO ACT.

The Sonny Bono Act extended copyright terms in the United States to the life of the author plus 70 years. For works (songs) published before January 1, 1978, the copyright term increased to a total of 95 years from the publication date before falling into the public domain.

Also included in the Sonny Bono Act is a small window of opportunity for songwriters or their heirs to reacquire song copyrights, regardless if the copyrights were given away or sold. This applies to songs written as recently as 35 years ago.

But, that window is small, and requires jumping through a few hoops. Time is of the essence.
